Almost 60 years ago, the BCDME Travellers stepped onto the turf in Miami and changed the trajectory of the football program forever. The 1965–66 season culminated in a defining moment: a thrilling 21–14 upset victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the 1966 Orange Bowl Classic. It was the first major bowl win in BCDME history, setting a standard of midwestern grit and physical dominance that still echoes in Evanston today.

That team wasn’t flashy. They were built on a punishing rushing attack and a suffocating defense that simply refused to break. Now, as the 2026 Travellers prepare for their historic jump to the FBS American Athletic Conference, the bridge between past and present has never felt more significant.

Voices from the Golden Season

Frank "Full-Steam" Miller, the legendary running back who anchored the offense during that Orange Bowl run, reflects on the milestone.

"We didn’t care that we were the underdogs against Oklahoma," Miller said during a recent anniversary banquet. "We knew our identity. We ran the ball down their throats, controlled the clock, and trusted our defense. To see it’s been 60 years... it makes me proud. We laid the bricks, but the young men wearing the winged logo today are building the castle."

Bobby "Hammer" Davis, the captain and fierce linebacker of the 1966 squad, sees a lot of his defense in today's team.

"When Jimmy 'Sticky' Valentine got that late interception to seal the Orange Bowl, that was just who we were. We took the ball away," Davis recalled. "Celebrating this 60th anniversary isn't just about looking back. It's about passing the torch. I watch these kids today, and they hit with that same Traveller pride."

The Legacy Continues: The 2026 Squad Looks Ahead

The current BCDME roster is well aware of the shoulders they stand on as they prepare to transition to the FBS level under head coach Ted Lasso. The expectations are higher than ever, and the players are ready to embrace the pressure.

Senior quarterback Casey Baugess, an elite 94-overall talent out of Las Vegas, understands the weight of the anniversary. "Coach Lasso talks about belief, and that 1966 team is the ultimate proof of it. They went into the Orange Bowl and proved BCDME belongs on the national stage. I want to make sure my senior year honors that standard as we head into the American Conference."

The defensive side of the ball also feels the connection. Sophomore middle linebacker Taylor Smith, a dominant 99-overall anchor from Portland, Oregon, embraces the comparisons to Bobby Davis. "You look at the film from '66, and it's pure, relentless football. As the guy calling the defense now, my goal is to make sure we strike just as hard. We want 'Hammer' Davis to watch us on Saturdays and know his legacy is safe."

Junior halfback Jae Thiele, a 98-overall offensive star also hailing from Las Vegas, hopes to channel the rushing dominance of Frank Miller this fall. "Frank 'Full-Steam' Miller ran with bad intentions. I respect that so much. Getting to wear the same colors and chase those same rushing milestones is a huge privilege."

As BCDME kicks off its inaugural FBS campaign, the spirit of the 1966 Orange Bowl champions will be right there with them, proving that while sixty years have passed, the Traveller way never changes.
